What is Motivation?
Motivation is a process that initiates, guides and maintains goal-oriented behaviors. It is the fuel that drives an individual to accomplish a task. Motivation can be either intrinsic or extrinsic. Motivation task is driven not by the pleasure derived from the task but by the reward or punishment associated with it. It can include anything from bonuses, promotions, and other incentives. Extrinsic motivation can be helpful in the short-term, but it is rarely sustainable in the long run. Intrinsic motivation is when a person is motivated by the satisfaction they derive from doing a task itself. Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is when a person is motivated by a reward or a consequence that is given for completing a task.
The Different Types of Motivation
Intrinsic Motivation
Intrinsic motivation is the most powerful and long-lasting type of motivation. It comes from within and is driven by personal satisfaction and enjoyment of a task. Intrinsic motivation is often observed in activities that people enjoy such as hobbies, sports, and art.
Extrinsic Motivation
Extrinsic motivation, as mentioned earlier, comes from an external source. Motivation to perform a task is driven not by the pleasure derived from the task but by the reward or punishment associated with it. Identified Motivation
Identified motivation is when individuals are motivated by understanding the value of an activity even if it does not provide immediate satisfaction. For example, cleaning the house may not be something people do for pleasure, but they understand the benefits of living in a tidy house.
Integrated Motivation
Integrated motivation is when individuals take an activity and make it part of their identity. For example, studies show that people who identify as “runners”, not only enjoy running but see it as part of their being. As a result, they may train harder and achieve better results.
Introjected Motivation
This type of motivation is associated with the internalization of externally imposed goals. Individuals feel like they are obligated to do something and take action to avoid feeling guilty or ashamed.
External Regulation
External regulation is when individuals are moved to take action because of external influences. Examples include following the rules and regulations set forth by an employer or authority figure.
Conclusion
The most effective type of motivation is intrinsic motivation. However, understanding the different types of motivation and how they work can help individuals harness the power of motivation to achieve their goals. It is wise to aim towards identified and integrated motivation over external regulations and introjected motivation. With the right mindset and approach, anything is possible.
